Center on Congress Director Lee Hamilton writes on “How to Fix a Broken Congress” in POLITICO, a newspaper and online publication that’s widely read in Washington, D.C.

“Despite all that unites us, we are also divided by different philosophies, different prospects in life, different backgrounds and different ways of defining what is in our own and our nation’s best interest….Congress is where those differences come together, which is often why its debates are — and should be — long and contentious,” Hamilton writes. 

“But diversity only explains conflict; it’s not an excuse for failing to overcome it….Congress needs to think of itself as a pragmatic problem-solver, a voice for a diverse nation and a searcher for the common good.”
