Robert H. McKinney
Chairman of the Executive Committee of First Indiana Corporation
Robert H. McKinney was the chairman of First Indiana Corporation, a publicly traded bank holding company, which operates First Indiana Bank; the largest bank based in Indianapolis until his retirement in April 2005. He was chairman of The Somerset Group, Inc., a publicly traded financial services company also based in Indianapolis, which merged into and with First Indiana Corporation on September 30, 2000. He is a founding partner of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, one of the largest law firms in Indianapolis, and was instrumental in its growth until he retired from that firm in 1991.
McKinney is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, the Naval Justice School, and of the Indiana University School of Law. He served in the Navy for three years in the Pacific Theater following his graduation from Annapolis and also served for two years in the Pacific during the Korean War.
During the Administration of President Carter, McKinney served as chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, the Federal Savings & Loan Insurance Corporation, and the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation. Following this tenure, he also served as a presidential-appointed director of the Federal National Mortgage Association.
McKinney is a member of the Presidential Advisory Board for Cuba and a director of Lynx Capital Corporation, a minority investment fund. He is a trustee of the Hudson Institute, a research organization with offices in Indianapolis, Washington, Montreal, and Brussels, the U. S. Naval Academy Foundation, the Indiana University Foundation, and the Sierra Club Foundation. He is also a director of many civic corporations including the Indianapolis Economic Club, the Indianapolis and Indiana Chambers of Commerce, Chief Executives Organization, Inc., the World Presidents' Organization, and the Indianapolis Committee on Foreign Relations.
McKinney was a trustee (1989 - 1998) and was president of the Board of Trustees (1993 - 1994) of Indiana University, an eight-campus public institution serving approximately 95,000 students. He was chairman of the Board of Advisors of Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis and was formerly a director and chairman of the Board of Trustees of Marian College. McKinney served as a director of Clarian Health Partners, Inc. and chairman of its Finance, Planning & Human Resources Committee. He has been appointed by U.S. Senator Evan Bayh to the Naval & Merchant Marine Academy Selection Committee. He has also been appointed to the Government Efficiency Commission of the State of Indiana by the Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives.
McKinney's involvement in national politics dates back to 1960, when he chaired the Indiana Kennedy for President Committee, and he has also served as chairman for the Indiana Campaigns of Presidential Candidates Muskie, Carter, and Mondale. He has been a regular member of the Indiana delegation to the National Democratic Convention since 1972.
McKinney has been active in the American, Indiana, and Indianapolis Bar Associations, serving as a director of the Young Lawyers Section of the ABA, a director of the Indiana State Bar, and treasurer and director of the Indianapolis Bar Association. He is a member of The Association of Life Insurance Counsel.
McKinney has received Honorary Doctorates of Law from Marian College in 1976 and Butler University in 1981. He is also a Master Knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
McKinney is the 1994 recipient of the Junior Achievement Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame Award, a 1995 recipient of the Hoosier Heritage Award, a 1999 recipient of the Indiana University Academy of Law Alumni Fellows Award, and the 2000 recipient of the Indianapolis Archdiocese Spirit of Service Award.
